My first project is with the ‘Dine’ the Navajo people in Arizona. They live in two very different areas. The first is Canyon de Chelly located in the north east corner of the state. I have been photographing and documenting their lives for the last 20 years. My objective with all of these projects is to show the culture the heritage and strength of it’s people. In the many photographs taken I have captured the beauty of their land and the history that is so closely connected to it.

The second area is called Big Mountain located on the Hopi reservation north east Arizona. These Navajos were forcefully relocated by the US government onto Hopi land. Whether they remain on this land is still questionable and to this day there are people who wish to relocate Navajos who have lived on this land for generations. I have been photographing these people for years and what is unique is that they live of the grid, they live many miles from a paved road. When you talk with an elder you realize how connected they are to the land and how disconnected we have become.

The third is in South Dakota, the Lakota of the Pine Ridge reservation. I have been photographing the people and the land for the past 5 years. With Wounded Knee located here there is so much history. The buffalo herds are starting to come back in real numbers, bringing back a very important connection to the Lakota. Each year they have sun dances and a few years ago I had the good fortune to be invited to one by a medicine man, even though I was not allowed to photograph it, the experience was amazing to watch their spiritual connection and commitment.

The fourth is in New Mexico with the Apache at Alamogordo. Their history is rich in it’s culture and heritage. This project is in it’s beginning stage and I look forward to getting back and working with the people.
